Celebrating 25 years

Helping disabled people in Bedfordshire, Luton and Northamptonshire

Jill Pick our Chair of the Board of Trustees talks about how our charity was started and our progress over the last 25 years.

“On 14 February The Disability Resource Centre celebrates 25 years of changing the lives of disabled people.

As we begin our celebrations we can look back on so many achievements.

The Disability Resource Centre became a registered charity on 14 February 1994.

The small steering group of disabled people set out to create a centre where people would have access to disability information and equipment advice to improve their lives and increase independence.

They worked with statutory and other voluntary organisations to have services under one roof at Poynters House in Dunstable providing a one stop shop.

The vision and confidence of that initial group has led to over 150,000 information and advice enquiries being dealt with over the 25 years.

In recent years those services have been built on to include equipment sales and wheelchair loans, support with direct payments, support for carers, employment support, advice on welfare benefits, peer support groups and health and wellbeing courses.

Disabled people have always been at the centre of everything The Disability Resource Centre does.

We know the value of those services from the feedback we receive and the personal stories of the difference our staff and services have made.

As part of our 25th anniversary we will be asking individuals who have been supported by us to post their appreciation online.

Some of our services are funded by contracts, but The Disability Resource Centre is increasingly reliant on fundraising and donations to enable us to meet the needs of disabled people.

Lorna Bailey is running in the London Marathon in April in support of The Disability Resource Centre. To help us mark our anniversary we will be focussing on raising funds and encouraging people to donate and contact us if they can help with fundraising.

The Disability Resource Centre provides services for people with disabilities and long term health conditions, of all ages. Many people have contributed to the success of the organisation. Staff, volunteers, trustees and funders have all played a part in shaping The Disability Resource Centre as the highly valued place that it is today. Thank you to all of them.

The needs and aspirations of disabled people continue to require our support.

Please join us in making our 25th year a year of celebration of all that has been achieved so far”.
